Learning and Motivation

Mike Yough

Abstract

“Learning and Motivation” is a three-hour, 200-level, foundational education course in the teacher education program at Purdue University. The course is coupled with a course on “The Inclusive Classroom,” and the two courses share a recitation section and practicum experience. General topics include learning, motivation, development, the creation of conducive learning environments, and assessment. In education, the means in which content is delivered also serve as an end. Thus, a course on learning and motivation that is structured in such a way that fails to actually promote learning and motivation sends mixed signals to students and serves to undermine the content of the course. Therefore, many features of the course are designed so as to be consistent with the principals of learning and motivation.
