Global Studies in the Second Language Classroom: Issues of Student Interest

John Esposito

This syllabus is an attempt to address issues of curricular focus and content in the trans-disciplinary field of global studies while fostering an international perspective in the English as a Foreign Language classroom. By challenging students to move beyond familiar frames of reference and build upon second language strengths, the course encourages students to take an active and critical role in the learning process. While the syllabus has been tailored for an elective course offered at a women's junior college in Japan, it can readily be adapted for students in other geographical, linguistic, or disciplinary settings.
